Electrocardiograms (EKGs) record the electrical impulses of the heart that cause it to beat. Electroencephalograms record the electrical impulses of the brain. These are just two examples demonstrating the existence of electrical impulses in the body. Electrical stimulation works with the electrical fields in the body to promote healing. Different frequencies can be used to stimulate different parts of the body to heal. E-stim of acupuncture points has been shown to be very effective in the reduction of pain. It is felt that electrical stimulation softens the tissues and allows the sensors for pain to reset.
We have E-stim techniques that do not use needles. One way is to use a cotton tipped probe to stimulate acupuncture points. Most people do not feel any sensation with this technique. In some situations adhesive pads are applied to the skin on specific sites. Depending on the location, a patient may feel nothing or a pleasant tingling. Neither of these techniques should be uncomfortable. This is also very effective with children or adults who may be hesitant to use needles.
Results for pain may be dependent on whether it is chronic or pain of a more recent duration. Chronic pain indicates the body has been out of balance longer and it may take longer to resolve than pain of a shorter duration. However, everyone is an individual and we have seen individuals with pain of long standing duration for which surgery was to be the only solution, resolve with just two or three treatments.
